About the Place
Built between 915-921 AD by Armenian King Gagik I Ardsruni, the Akdamar Memorial Museum (Church) is a stunning example of medieval Armenian architecture. Its relief-covered façade tells biblical stories and depicts scenes from noble life. Restored in 2005-2006, it stands as a symbol of Van’s cultural heritage. The name “Akdamar” originates from a local legend of forbidden love.
